About this project, and me
I’m sending disposable cameras all over the place in hopes of seeing some interesting stuff. What that stuff will be, I have little control over. I started by sending cameras to my friends. I have also been leaving cameras in random places or handing them to random people. Each camera has a little note that tells people to take a couple of pictures and pass the camera on, and then to visit the website to tell their stories.
I don’t expect to hear back from too many of the cameras, at least percentage-wise, so I’m going to make up for that by ordering a ton of cameras. I started with twenty-five, but I got impatient waiting for them, so I bought ten more.
Who am I? I’m Alvin Liang and I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States. I work at an Internet startup for a living, and I just want to do interesting things that brighten people’s days. Interesting and random things. I wish I was an artist, but that didn’t pan out, so here’s something else instead. I space out a lot and write and draw (badly) and play music and whatever I feel like. I drive in circles in the middle of the night. I’m a half-decent photographer but I think that’s only because I take 10000000000 pictures with 0.00000001% of them turning out good. I ask strange questions and get into staring contests with animals. I look up a lot. I also usually write without capital letters because I’m lazy, but hey, this is for you.
This is also probably the biggest thing I’ve ever planned on my own. I know, sad. I tend to have no plan and do random things instead. I’m not the only one to have come up with this idea, either, but I do hope to push it further and faster. (In other words, I’m shifting a ton of disposable income towards this, haha.)
I should also thank a few people: Let’s start with Jeeyun Kim for logo design! It’s a nifty logo. She’s also helping me embellish the cameras a bit; the first few were kinda garishly labeled by me.
And I got inspiration from the Disposable Memory Project, and some site before that which I just for the life of me cannot find. I am just a lame copycat, in one sense. But I promise I am gonna release a lot more cameras, and do a few extra bonus experiments of my own.
